Flute, Fiddle and More
Max Carmichael is a lavishly talented musician equally at home on the wooden flute, five-string banjo, guitar or Irish bouzouki. Originally from Red Bank, NJ and now based in Chatham, NY, Max performs with a number of folk and traditional music groups but has lately been collaborating with Brooklyn-based fiddler Matthew Christian. Matthew grew up in New England and was inspired to take up the fiddle by New Hampshire contra dance great Dudley Laufman. He later became a street busker of such notoriety that he was featured in The Economist and Rolling Stone. Matthew mostly plays indoors these days and, though well-versed in playing for contras and English country dances, is particularly devoted to exploring the rich heritage of Irish traditional music in New York City.
